Contemporary Decor and Furnishings
Published on May 16th, 2020.
Are you looking for décor that is simple, sleek, chic and a little funky? Contemporary décor is what you want. Simple yet bold, decorating in contemporary fashion offers a look that is totally unique. Some confuse this style with others like deco, but when you see a good example, you will realize that it stands apart from any other style.
What really sets your style apart from the rest is how you accessorize. Every home needs a touch of individuality, as well as glimpses of your personality here and there; this is what makes it yours! By using furniture, flooring and accessories you truly love, your home will be one that is comfortable, relaxing and beautiful.
Contemporary Furnishings
Contemporary furnishings are sleek and simple. Consider living room tables that are topped with glass, or simple wooden tables with no elaborate decoration. Chairs, sofas and recliners can be leather or even wood that is polished to a high gloss. Here again, you want a simple look – nothing fancy or too elaborate looking. Leather and steel is great in this style of décor!
Scandinavian design furniture is suited well to this style of decorating. In the bedroom, consider a simple headboard with no footboard. This creates an airy, open feel that isn’t bulky.
Adding Interest to Walls
The walls of your home can be nearly any color you like; soft pastels work well, as do bold colors. Paint only a wall or two in the room instead of all walls, this helps break the room up and adds depth. You may even consider using a faux finish on one wall. For the windows, you can leave them totally bare or use simple shutters.
Light Up Your Funky Chic Décor!
All too often, people forget that there are different styles of lighting. To create a truly contemporary look, use the right lighting. Light the kitchen with fluorescent lights to create a bright space. The living area looks great when recessed lighting is used, particularly when it is placed to highlight areas of interest or a focal point. You may want to consider touches of neon lighting here and there as well. Place a lamp or two in the living area. Retro style lamps are a perfect complement to contemporary furnishings.
Go Wild with Accessories
Here comes the fun part – and this is where you can really add personality. Accessories do for your home what jewelry does for you. It adds sparkle and dresses the room up! For contemporary décor, you will want to use abstract glass sculptures, rugs with abstract or geometric designs, primitive art, colorful abstract paintings and even black and white pictures.
Artwork can be hung without a frame, or with a simple chrome or brass frame. Choose accessories that really speak to you, or that you absolutely feel would make the perfect accent in your home. Contemporary décor is sleek, hip, and never bulky or congested looking. Use your imagination and have fun creating a look that all your friends will envy!

Orange color scheme for open concept living room/kitchen?
Published on August 14th, 2010.
I am trying to come up with a decorating scheme for my open concept living room/kitchen/dining area.
In the kitchen, the walls will be yellow, cabinets white, countertop black stone, black appliances, and black and white checkered floor. It will look kind of like a modernized 50’s diner.
I am not sure how to integrate this style into the living room. My hubby and I are pretty rock n’ roll, but also quite modern/contemporary. We wanted to paint the living room walls a burnt orange color, but weren’t sure about any of the other colors to use…
We thought about keeping the white crown moulding/window sills/baseboards. What I need are some suggestions for decor colors that will connect our living space to our kitchen.

Having trouble finding Living Room ideas! PLEASE help!!!?
Published on August 12th, 2010.
I just moved this past weekend into a larger home. I bought a new sectional that was brown leather. I was very excited because I wanted to have a brown/turquoise theme.
However, the couch came yesterday and I love it, but it has a distinct redish tint as opposed to the chocolate brown I thought it was. Thankfully, I hadn’t gotten any home decor stuff yet.
The only color that keeps popping in my head is an olive green color and I really want to stay away from that.
As far as my taste goes, I love contemporary with clean lines but my boyfriend likes comfortable warm rooms so I was trying to get a bit of both which is why I went with this sectional.
I have family coming in to visit next weekend and had hoped I would have a little more finished look by the time they came! I’m in a rut- please help!
Looking forward to your answers,
Tara

Is it weird to put an area rug on carpet?
Published on August 11th, 2010.
I have very light colored tan carpeting throughout my house with contemporary decor. The color scheme reads more towards reds/browns/orange, and the furniture style is mainly espresso and light tan pieces with contemporary lines. The walls in my combined living room and dining room are a very light silver/gray with a half accent wall in bright red below the chair rail in the dining nook. The living room is spacious but I feel it really needs some more pop in color other than just the painting we have on the large wall. I’ve found this area rug that I really like and I think it would look good, but I have to ask, is it weird or awkward to have an area rug in a carpeted living room? I just can’t help but feel like I need to cover up the massive amounts of neutral carpet.
Here’s the rug, in case it helps in visualizing with the rest of the description above.

Please help! Any tips for redecorating my room?
Published on August 10th, 2010.
i want my room to have a black-and-white, classy theme that’s a mix between "old hollywood" and "modern". here are some websites that kind of have the feel of what i want:
old hollywood: http://mariesmanordecorating.com/hollywood/hollywood-movie-theme-bedrooms.html
modern: http://teensthemes.com/black-and-white-contemporary-bedrooms.html ; http://mariesmanor.fateback.com/Teens/Black_and_White_Theme_Decorating.html
so far all i have is a black-and-white poster of audrey hepburn and a black-and-white poster of new york, and i’m planning on getting more posters or old, famous stars (marilyn monroe, lucille ball, gene kelly, cary grant, etc.) and famous cities (paris, london, etc.)
but THIS is what i need to find:
-black-and-white bedding (or possibly a different, neutral color)
-lamps
-rugs
-wall color? like a brown that won’t clash with the black-and-white
-any other decor
if you find any websites with the things i need or have a better idea of what i should include please please PLEASE share!
please and thank you! ![]()

My mother-in-law and I have completely different tastes!?
Published on August 7th, 2010.
From home decor to clothing to the type of music we prefer, etc. Well, she is always buying little knick knacks for our house, but again, 1) we don’t like the same things (the items she buys are very country-like & old fashioned & I’m more contemporary), 2) we have small home and just can’t fit all of these things in our home! She goes garage sale-ing constantly & just about every garage sale she goes to, she buys my husband and I something for the house. What is a polite way of telling her this is junk, ugly and/or don’t have room for it so please stop buying us this stuff! Any suggestions?
Thanks to all who posted! Yes, you are all right by saying "at least she’s thinking of us" & "she means well" which she really does mean well. I just rather not have yard sale items that people got rid of to de-clutter their house & now it’s cluttering mine!
Anyways, thanks for the advice!

I need to find a comforter/bedding set thats ultra modern?
Published on August 6th, 2010.
I have a man cave with a very minimalist approach to decor and I usually use the interchangeable components (area rugs/bed and bath/prints) to push a color or theme into my space with out too much serious consideration as I usually change things up every 8-10 months.Right now I have a desire for a very edgy, raw, or ultra modern feeling…And I havent comitted as of yet to any one direction cause I reallyt cant find much of a selection that strays from the traditional in bedding ideas. The closest I can find are classified as urban/contemporary styles and theyre WAY to generic for what I had in mind. Im looking for something with a real edge to it or a statement idea for my bedding that really spins the whole space on its ear so to speak. I dont even mind decorating or accesories that lean towards the shocking, strange, or thought provoking in design its just hard to find leads to pick thru. Am I asking too much from the bedding realm in general or have I missed something in my travels? Thanks!
